Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub did the trick. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is much too clever not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings essential with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality counts but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame prevails. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the previous squad. He watched the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel discuss loving the team's dynamism and values. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all must help him and create an environment which he can [have] his drive in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 who needs love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping the captain's game in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it harms the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this vision about him for years. I think it suits him best.”
He agreed there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is additionally so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager talked about one star bursting through for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an superior one.
