The Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States
One year ago, the situation was completely separate. Ahead of the national election, considerate citizens could recognize the country's serious imperfections – its unfairness and disparity – however they continued to perceive it as the United States. A democracy. A land where constitutional order held significance. A country guided by a dignified and upright leader, notwithstanding his older age and declining health.
Nowadays, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we live in. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are collected and pushed into vans, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is being destroyed for an obscene dance hall. Donald Trump is harassing his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities hand over a massive sum of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities on false pretexts. The military command, renamed the War Department, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Colleges, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are treated like nobility.
“America, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the brink toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” Garrett Graff, commented in August. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in this country.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.
Yet, it is known that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his deeply disturbing initial presidency and even after the warnings associated with the understanding of the conservative plan – following the president personally said publicly he intended to act as an autocrat only on the first day – a majority of citizens elected him over his Democratic opponent.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to recognize that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. Where will another 36 months of this downfall leave us? And what if that timeframe turns into an prolonged era, because there is no one to stop this president from opting that additional tenure is required, possibly for security concerns?
Granted, there is still hope. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that may bring a different balance of power, should Democrats recapture one or both houses of Congress. We have public servants who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, like Democratic congressmen that are starting a probe into the attempted fund seizure from the justice department.
And a national vote three years from now could initiate the path to healing just as the prior selection placed us on this disappointing trajectory.
There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.
An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the US is stirring”, exactly as before following the Red Scare in the 1950s or amid anti-war demonstrations or throughout the seventies crisis.
During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.
The author states he understands the indicators of that resurgence and observes it occurring now. For proof, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the largely united refusal by journalists to sign the defense department’s demands they only publish authorized information.
“The sleeping giant always remains asleep until some venality grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous toward public welfare, specific cruelty so disruptive, that he is compelled other than to stir.”
It's a positive outlook, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may be validated.
Meanwhile, the crucial issues endure: will the nation regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status internationally and its commitment to legal principles?
Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My cynical mind suggests that the second option is true; that all may indeed be lost. My optimistic spirit, though, tells me that we need to strive, through all methods available.
In my case, working in journalism analysis, that means pushing media professionals to commit, more thoroughly, to their duty of holding power to account. For some people, it might involve working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to safeguard ballot privileges.
Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. All we can do is try to persevere.
What Offers Me Hope Now
The interaction I encounter with students with young journalists, who are both idealistic and practical, {always
