At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Residents have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Transport routes stay blocked across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.
Operation Background
The combined action by various security forces comes after a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
Larger Framework
Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the country before significant global gatherings in the nation.
The United Nations climate conference COP30 is set to occur in the northern city of Belem in the eleventh month.
